Preparing for the NEST exam and IAT requires a different approach than JEE or NEET. The most common mistake aspirants make is ignoring NCERT textbooks in favour of high-level coaching modules, which leads to losing easy marks on fundamental, concept-based questions.
Cracking the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) and the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) for CEBS Mumbai and NISER requires shifting your mindset from "speed" to "deep conceptual analysis." Many brilliant students fail to secure a seat simply because they carry their JEE/NEET habits into these pure science exams.
Here are the top 5 mistakes to avoid:
1. Ignoring NCERT Textbooks
Unlike JEE Advanced, which often tests concepts outside the standard high school framework, IAT and NEST are strictly bound to the NCERT syllabus. Reading NCERT Biology and Chemistry line-by-line is non-negotiable. Skipping the "Summary" and "Points to Ponder" sections is a major blunder.
2. Skipping the 4th Subject (Math or Biology)
Engineering students often leave Biology blank, while medical students skip Mathematics. Because all subjects carry equal weightage, attempting even 5-6 easy questions in your "weak" subject can boost your overall score by 20-24 marks, drastically improving your rank.
3. Treating IAT/NEST like JEE Main
JEE Main is a speed-and-accuracy test. IAT and NEST are tests of scientific stamina. The questions often combine multiple concepts (e.g., mixing thermodynamics with electrochemistry). Do not rush. It is better to attempt fewer questions with 100% accuracy than to blindly guess and accumulate negative marks.
4. Lack of Specialised Mock Tests
Solving standard JEE mock tests will not help you clear the NEST exam preparation. The interface, marking scheme, and interdisciplinary nature of pure science exams are unique. You must practice on exact mock simulators.
5. Poor Sectional Time Management
Because some questions are deeply analytical, students often spend 45 minutes on a single section, leaving no time for easier questions in other subjects.
Feature | IAT (IISER) | NEST (NISER/CEBS) |
Total Marks | 240 (60 per subject) | 200 (Best 3 out of 4 subjects considered) |
Duration | 3 Hours | 3.5 Hours |
Question Type | Single Correct MCQ | Single Correct & Multiple Correct MCQ |
